Ganas Assembly - In the Spirit of Cesar and Dolores

Press Release:

PCUN President Ramon Ramirez to speak at Ganas Assembly

The Ganas members of Kelly Middle School would like to invite you to this year’s Ganas Assembly, “In the Spirit of César and Dolores.” This cultural celebration will be held at Kelly Middle School from 1:50 to 3:20 p.m. on Thursday, June 3. “In the Spirit of César and Dolores” is the first Ganas assembly since 2005.
Ramon Ramirez, president of Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (PCUN) - Oregon’s farm-workers union - will be featured as the keynote speaker for this educational event. In addition, live music will be provided by The Ganas Assembly Group, featuring Ganas co-founders Jim Garcia and Roscoe Caron, the Kelly Middle School band, the Ganas dancers, the MEChA Student Band, and a fashion show, all in celebration of Latino culture and diversity.
Ganas is an after-school Latino leadership program that links Latino middle school students with Latino students from the University of Oregon. The UO members of MEChA (Chicano/Latino student union) provide academic tutoring, interpersonal mentoring, cultural sharing, role-modeling and leadership development to the middle school students. The overall goal of Ganas is to develop bi-cultural leaders: Students who possess the skills, knowledge and drive to become leaders of the future in their community without surrendering their cultural identity.
The seventh and eighth grade students participating in Ganas currently boast a collective GPA of 3.28. All Ganas students come from Spanish-speaking homes. Ganas is in its 13th year in Eugene.
“In the Spirit of César and Dolores,” is a chance for the Ganas students to put their leadership skills into action, and to educate the community about Latino culture and history.
