Best Of The Decade:
OSU's top 10 players of the 2000s: #10 - Chad Johnson
By Brian Elder KVAL SportsOur countdown of the top Oregon and Oregon State players of the 2000s continues with one of the greatest one year wonders in the the history of OSU. Before he was Chad Ochocinco, he was Chad Johnson. His tenure at Oregon State was brief (Ochocinco himself has even openly admitted that he wasn't exactly a regular at class while at OSU), but he was one of the key members of the greatest team in OSU history. Johnson's only season as a Beaver came during the 2000 season, when OSU finished 11-1 and ranked fourth in the country after clobbering Notre Dame 41-9 in the Fiesta Bowl. He got off to a slow start that year, catching only one pass in each of the first two games for a total of 13 yards. His breakout game came in Oregon State's only defeat of the season at Washington. Down 33-23 in the fourth quarter, Jonathan Smith hooked up with Johnson for an 80-yard touchdown to cut the lead to a field goal with 7:22 left to play. But the Beavers missed a field goal as time expired to fall just short, 33-30. Johnson had just two receptions in the game, but they added up to 116 yards and the touchdown. He cemented his reputation as a big-play receiver the next week when he raced 97 yards to the endzone on a pass from Smith. In the final game of his single season at Oregon State, Johnson caught four passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns - including a game breaking 74 yard strike from Smith in the second quarter to start the rout of Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. Johnson finished the year with 37 receptions for a team-high 806 yards and eight touchdowns. He was drafted in the second round - 36th overall - by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2001 NFL Draft.
