EUGENE, Ore. -- We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto.

A tornado warning was in effect for central Marion County and north-central Linn County until 4 p.m.

At 3:35 p.m., National Weather Service radar showed a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado near Lyons, 17 miles west of Detroit, moving northwest at 20 mph.

As of 4:24 p.m., radar continued to indicate a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing destructive winds in excess of 70 mph, the Weather Service reported.

The doppler radar indicated some weak rotation within this storm. While not immediately likely, a tornado may still develop, the Weather Service said in a warning.

A YouNews reporter in Peoria, Ore., posted photographs of possible tornado activity.

The Weather Service has not yet confirmed whether or not a tornado formed and touched down anywhere in Oregon.

Also, severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday evening for northwestern Oregon from Lane to Washington counties.

But you want to read about the tornado:

The tornado will be near Sublimity, Lyons, Mehema and Silver Falls, the weather service said.

A tornado warning means that a tornado is imminent or occurring. If
you are in the path of this dangerous storm, the Weather Service says you should take cover now on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and stay away from windows.

The safest place to be during a tornado is in a basement. Get under a workbench or other piece of sturdy furniture. If no basement is
available, seek shelter on the lowest floor of the building in an interior hallway or room such as a closet. use blankets or pillows to cover your body and always stay away from windows.

If in mobile homes or vehicles, evacuate them and get inside a substantial shelter. If no shelter is available, lie flat in the nearest ditch or other low spot and cover your head with your hands.
