Jury: Former nonprofit director not guilty of theft

A jury cleared the former executive director of a shelter for domestic violence victims of charges she stole more than $56,000 from the organization.

Ethel Bassett, longtime executive director of Siuslaw Outreach Services, was found not guilty at trial this week.

Bassett was fired in 2008 by the nonprofit's board of directors.

Florence police said an investigation found money missing from a program designed to help offenders attend domestic violence and rehabilitation classes. The alleged thefts took place over several years.
