Theft suspect jumps in river to avoid arrest

Florence Police are looking for a man who jumped in the Siuslaw River and was last seen floating toward the Pacific Ocean.

They believe Robert "Robbie" Alan Strebendt vandalized the old Lotus Seafood Palace and stole several large coils of electrical wire before jumping from the docks behind the old restaurant.

About 3:30 a.m. an Oregon State Police Trooper on security duty first noticed someone on the dock and called Florence Police. Police used a night-vision device to see the suspect who had a duffle bag nearby. When officers approached Strebendt, he moved away then jumped in the river. Later, police recovered the wire nearby.

Strebendt, who is also known as Robbie Cooksey, is described as being 6-feet tall, 185 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

If you have any information about him, you are asked to call the Florence Police Department at (541) 997-3515.
