Sanitation Committee concerned about electronic waste

In response to Oregon's new law, effective Jan. 1, that prohibits the disposal of electronics, the Junction City Sanitation Committee discussed how to effectively hold Junction City residents accountable at its Jan. 4 meeting.

Jason Knope, Junction City Public Works Director, explained that each dump truck carries a monitor within the cab that records the tote as it is being emptied. If the driver comes across an illegal item being disposed of, he is to climb into the truck and take out the illegal item.

The prospect of either charging a fee or "restitution at a court level" was discussed. Creating a public drop off location with the cooperation of Next Step Recycling is also in the works.
