ORI: Third best non-profit to work for in Oregon

The 100 Best Nonprofits to Work for in Oregon list is out, and Oregon Research Institute (ORI) ranks as the third best large nonprofit to work for in Oregon. In this first-ever Oregon Business Magazine survey, nonprofit organizations were ranked in several areas including employee attraction/retention, working environment, decision-making and supervision, and rewards and recognition.

"This is quite an honor," said Cynthia R. Guinn, executive director. "We're very proud of our management practices, and we strive to provide an environment that supports employee participation and open communication."

Since 1994, Oregon Business has conducted the 100 Best Companies to Work for in Oregon survey to identify and honor the business leaders in the state who provide the best workplaces. In 2009, ORI ranked first among large companies to work for in Lane County.

Oregon Business Magazine launched the competition this year to recognize nonprofits as key businesses critical to the economic health of the state. Over 200 nonprofits participated in the project, which included an anonymous 50-question employee survey and an independent assessment of the nonprofit employers' workplace practices.

ORI, founded in 1960, has over 250 employees at its offices in Eugene, Portland, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Its scientists conduct research on chronic illness management, adolescent depression and substance use, prevention of child behavior problems, tobacco use cessation, and personality assessment. Funded almost entirely by federal research dollars, the institute boasts a democratically managed workplace and actively promotes employee participation, teamwork, and consensus decision-making.
