EUGENE, Ore. -- One is a compact convertible Cabriolet, the other an iconic Bug.

But these beat up old Volkswagens aren't sitting around collecting rust anymore: The two are at the heart of a weekly showdown between rival auto shop students in Eugene and Springfield.

KVAL News threw down the gauntlet: Flip a coin, take a car and rehab the rig -- with your progress chronicled on morning television, and the final color of the car determined in online voting on the homepage of KVAL.com.

Auto shop teachers at Willamette High School in Eugene and Springfield High School in Springfield took the challenge.
