The cold weather has many local social service shelters bracing for the flood of homeless folks seeking refuge from the elements.

Right now it is just about 45 degrees outside, not at freezing yet but the wind and the rain make the conditions more unbearable, they are kind of conditions most of us couldn't image having to sleep in. Alicia Doriety and her two year old son Joshua will be sleeping at the Eugene Mission. Doriety says, "I think it is a priveledge to be here." That's because the beds are taken.

Eugene Mission Executive Director, Ernie Uniger says "we have 400 beds for men women and children and all the buildings are full." Demand in the kitchen has also increased. Unger says, "we're serving 800 meals a day that is way up from last year at this time." The Eugene mission isn't the only place seeing an increase in demand here at St. Vincent de Paul's Eugene Service Station they're also seeing the number of people in need way up.

Authorities say even when it is not freezing sleeping out in the elements can be dangerous. The Eugene Mission and St. Vincent de Paul are both asking for donations of non-perishable foods as well as warm coats and socks.

Patch, our cat is waiting for breakfast as he enjoys the Sun in Lowell while the Valley and Eugene has a blanket of fog. A 13 mile drive to Lowell east of I-5 and you can escape the fog that Eugene residents put up with. It is worth the short commute to live out of the fog for most of the winter.
