Police car lights at night

Eugene police shot and killed a mentally-ill 19 year old Churchill High School grad Tuesday. Police say they were called to the home on Skyview Lane this morning by the young man's mother who said her son was threatening to stab her and her husband, now her son is dead.

Neighbor Christine Lewandowski says, "This is a terrible tragedy that can happen to any family and our hearts go out to the family." Neighbors along Skyview Lane in the South hills of Eugene woke early Tuesday morning to the sound of a gun firing and glass breaking. "All the taping off at the park and cop cars everywhere," says neighbor Vicki Street. Then they learned 19 year old Ryan Salisbury had been shot and killed by police. His shoes left on the cement.

Melinda Kletzok with the Eugene Police Department, "early reports were he was armed with a knife and he came outside of the home and confronted officers who were responding and he was shot and they did find a knife at the scene." Police say Salisbury threatened the family and they had barricaded themselves in a bedroom while he went on a rampage through the home, breaking glass. Just hours later the windows are boarded up and the police tape is down but the loss is still fresh in the hearts of Ryan Salisbury's friends. Friend, Nigel Chanay says, "We all miss him, I guess you have to see it to believe it."

About a dozen of Salisbury's former classmates gathered at Skyview Park across the street from the house to provide each other comfort. Nigel Chanay has known Salisbury since their freshman year. Chanay says although Salisbury was a fun-loving kid who enjoyed rugby, his mental-illness was a constant battle. "Bipolar is a really serious disorder I've seen him have an episode before it was scary he sees things in his mind things he doesn't want to do its just so graphic and compelling he fought really hard about it," says Chanay.

Salisbury was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officers Rick Lowe, John Sharlow and Shawn Trotter have been placed on paid administrative leave. Eugene Police say they first shot bean bag rounds at Salisbury before fatally shooting him. Investigators have not said, how many shots were fired. The Lane County District Attorney's Office is investigating the actions of the Eugene Police Department.
