Oops! Roseburg weekly jumps gun on governor's race

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- It was bound to happen. In the media, where everyone is anxious to get out the news to the waiting public, it was only a matter of time before someone called a race prematurely.
The most famous mistake in history was the the Chicago Tribune headline during the 1948 presidential election, when everyone went to bed on Tuesday night thinking Thomas Dewey was the next President of the United States. When all the votes were counted, Harry Truman had won.
It happened here Wednesday morning, when the weekly Roseburg Beacon went to press with its 'Exclusive Election Edition,' thinking Chris Dudley had won the governor's race.
Once the votes started pouring in from the heavily democratic Multnomah County area, the race got closer and closer until John Kitzhaber passed up Dudley and won the race.
