Homeless veterans turn to local shelters

On Monday, we're marking Veteran's Day and nearly 6,000 are homeless.

In Eugene, some displaced veterans seek help at the Eugene Mission.

According to assistant director Lynn Antis, vets used to make up one-third of the people seeking help there.

Now, those numbers are falling as Vietnam War veterans beging collecting Social Security.

However, a new generation of soldier--those who fought in the Persian Gulf and in Iraq--are now seeking help.

"It remains to be seen just what the impact is going to be," said Antis. "The size of the war isn't as large as Vietnam but it's still going to have it's homeless casualties."

Nationwide, there are nearly 200-thousand homeless veterans.

That equates to more than one-quarter of the nationa's homeless population.
