DOWNTOWN EUGENE - The Landbanking Program for Affordable Housing has received a National Government Innovations Award. The accolade comes with a $10,000 grant. Harvard University's Ash Institute selected Eugene from a pool of nearly a thousand applicants.

"We're very excited to receive national recognition," said Housing Finance Analyst Stephanie Jennings. "I believe that it was the foresight to think ahead to purchase land for the future to make affordable housing possible throughout the entire community."

Landbanking has created more than 500 affordable housing units in Eugene, like Sheldon Village. Another 200 are in the the works. Mayor Kitty Piercy received the award at Monday's City Council meeting, and recognized others who help make the program a success.
