Thief takes off in truck with owner asleep in back
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- An armed man stole a pickup truck while the owner was sleeping in the back of the vehicle, police said.
Officials said the truck's owner was asleep in the canopy-covered truck bed when it was stolen at about 1:14 a.m. from the parking lot of the Capitol Medical Center.
The owner called 911 from inside the truck bed and was able to give dispatchers periodic updates on his location.
He was soon unable to recognize his surroundings and dispatchers used GPS signals from the his cell phone to track the truck's location, police said.
The thief drove the truck north on Highway 101 into Mason County where he eventually stopped, got out of the cab and walked toward the back of the truck armed with a knife.
The owner jumped out of the truck bed and ran to a nearby home to ask for help.
The thief got back in the truck and drove off.
Officials asked anyone who sees the silver 1989 Toyota pickup to call police. The truck has a brown canopy and has Washington license B59457N.
