The Oregon Department of Transportation is asking the public to weigh in on environmental impacts of a new, Interstate 5 bridge.

It will be a replacement for the I-5 bridge over the Willamette river near Glenwood. At a public hearing Thursday Oregon Department of Transportation took a look at the potential environmental impacts of the project, and let community members voice their opinions.

Assistant Manager of Nature Project at ODOT Jim Cox explained, "ODOT knows how to design and build bridges but we don't know the communities like the people that live here. And if we get them involved we can get a bridge that works for all of us."

So far, the main idea is for two side-by-side bridge structures. This would allow for natural light under the bridges and would include six traffic lanes.

The public comment period ends February 19th.

The design phase should begin this spring
