Training in Track Town: Best Running Trails
EUGENE - Day or night, you'd be hard pressed to find the Amazon Trail empty.
The one mile, woodchip loop in South Eugene is easy on the knees--and easily one of the most popular trails in town.
It's a favorite of both weekend warriers and well known names in the racing community.
We found Odis Sanders, a National 5K champion in 1979, 1980 and 1981, running at Amazon. He tells us he loves celebrity spotting on the trial.
"This is the first place I ever saw when I got here for Nike Marathon in 81 and I just love this trail," he said. "I was running around, there's Mary Slaney."
Runners and walkers looking for a more scenic route might try the Ruth Bascom Riverbank Trail System.
Offering views of the Willamette River and other Eugene landmarks, a full loop will take you 12 miles. Runners can choose shorter paths if they'd like.
And if it's history you're looking for, look no further than Alton Baker Park.
"Pre's Trail is a lovely place for a runner to treat themselves to a great run," said Joe Henderson, a marathon running coach. He adds the caveat that Pre's Trail is isolated and recommends women run in pairs, especially at night.
You can also try the all weather tracks at local high schools, Lane Community College and the University of Oregon.
