4-J planning tax levy measure for Nov. ballot

By KVAL Web Staff

Despite a property tax levy that doesn't expire for another two years, the Eugene 4-J school board is planning to put the measure on the ballot in November , This year.

The reason? -- Expected high voter turnout in November.

A double majority provision in the law requires the levy be approved by more than fifty percent of voters, And requires more than fifty percent voter turnout.

The turnout requirement is based on voter registration from the previous November.
The board plans to decide on the move at their meeting in May.

"Because we're expected a huge turnout this November with the presidential election, we're expecting the tax rolls to increase, so it will be even harder to meet that double majority in the future vote" said Susan Fahey, CFO of the Eugene 4-J School District.

Voters will be asked to renew the tax levy at it's current rate.

It's expected to pull in about 14 million dollars this year, an amount Fahey says that equals the salary of about 160 teachers.
