COOS BAY - It's a part of the Coos Art Museum that contains a lot of history and memories and now it's getting a facelift, just in time for summer.

The Prefontaine Gallery inside the museum has served as a favorite for visitors over the years.

Now volunteers from the Prefontaine Memorial Committee are helping restore it back to its original charm with a new coat of paint, donated by Farr's True Value, new matting for photos and refinished floors.

"Looking through our visitor book, we see that we get people who come from all over the world to see this room. The redesign will fit in with the Mabel Hansen Gallery, which was recently remodeled," said CAM Executive Director Steven Broocks.

According to Kate and Cap Sharples, volunteers and members of the Prefontaine Memorial Committee, the room itself hasn't had a major remodel since it opened in 1985, which was a big reason to do it now.

"People are still interested in Steve and his legacy," said Cap. "We think it's important to keep this room in good shape and it's just another way to honor Steve's legacy."

The museum hopes to have the gallery up and running within a few weeks.
