Do we need diversity training? Eugene '08 says yes

By Molly Blancett

EUGENE - Starting next week, nearly two thousand Olympic Trial volunteers will begin training of their own, role playing to learn more about diversity.

That role playing will include questions like: "If I'm black, where do I get my hair done?" or, "If I'm handicapped, where can I park closest to the field?"

But not everyone thinks this is necessary, including a viewer who sent us this email:

"What the heck is our loco government done... If the liberalism is this extreme in this city, god help all of you! i am moving!!!!"

But, advocates disagree.

"I think as a community we've adopted the attitude that there's no way to over prepare for the Olympic Trials," said Eugene Chamber of Commerce President Dave Hauser.

Event organizers say the diversity training is a great way to better their customer service, their customers being the nearly 20,000 spectators, athletes and coaches expected to fill Hayward Field come July.

"We are a customer service provider," said Eugene '08 Co-Chair Vin Lananna. "And, we want to make sure that we know who our customers are and what the best thing for us to do to make sure their experience in Eugene the best they've ever had."

Organizers say despite the backlash surrounding the training, they're confident the games will go on without a hitch.

"We're going to make sure we do everything possible to put on a great event and to make sure that folks feel welcome," said Hauser.

Vin Lananna told us fifty to sixty percent of the athletes and coaches coming are African American, a group that makes up less than two percent of Eugene's population.
