SPRINGFIELD - The Springfield Public Library is celebrating its 100th birthday this week. Acting Director Debbie Steinman said when the library opened, there were less than fifty books to loan out. Now, there are nearly two-hundred thousand to choose from.

"Some ladies back in 1908 decided that Springfield needed a library," said Steinman. "This location, I believe, is the fourth location of the library. It's just continued to grow and grow."

The biggest changes over the year? Technology. Even thirty years ago the library didn't have computers. Now, free internet is a major draw for the library.

There will be a birthday celebration this Saturday at 1pm. There will be cake, musicians, a juggler and a visit from Clifford the Big Red Dog. Everyone is invited.
