Is Gamebird Park safe?

By Molly Blancett

SPRINGFIELD - People who live near Gamebird park say it's anything but fun and games.

"Transients get back there with their beer," said neighbor Carol Lanning. "There are children playing, some unsupervised by parents and also it's a great place to deal drugs."

The apartment manager installed a wrought iron gate to keep park goers out. But, neighbors say it hasn't worked.

"They're still getting through," said Lanning.

So, Gamebird park must be a high crime area, right? If it is, no one is telling police.

In all of last year, Springfield Police say there were only fifteen reports of crimes in the park. But, that doesn't mean there isn't a problem.

"Well, I think there's tremendous under-reporting," said Police Chief Jerry Smith.

Smith says issues like fewer jail beds and less prosecution of misdemeanors has all lead to a ,"why bother", mentality.

"You get a sense of helplessness," said Smith. "I think at times that why call when nothing can be done."

But if you do see something, police want you to call them. Smith says the more reports they get, the more they will know just what really is going on at Gamebird Park.

"It's going to tell us there's more activity there and that we can focus our patrol officers in areas where the most problems are occurring," said Smith.

The park is on city property, but is run by the county. We called Lane County Parks several times Monday, but, were unable to reach anybody.
