A Eugene man captured digital video of his motorcycle speedometer registering speeds up to 164 mph, according to police who reviewed the video after arresting the man for reckless driving.

The Oregon State Police seized the camera as evidence and obtained a search warrant to view its content. Police said the camera's video shows images of the motorcycle being operated at a high rate of speed through a construction zone on Interstate 5 near Eugene and Springfield. Police said the video shows the motorcycle continue northbound at speeds as high as 164 mph.

The incident began Sunday, April 13, at 12:30 p.m. when OSP Senior Trooper Jeff Leighty saw a motorcycle going northbound at what he estimated to be 100 mph to 115 mph. Leighty contacted state police command for the region. Two OSP troopers returning from a training assignment in Salem were southbound on I-5 at the time. The troopers moved into position and waited for the motorcycle.

The troopers stopped the motorcyclist and made contact with Ben Howard Kelley, 37, of Eugene. Troopers arrested Kelley on charges of reckless driving.

The troopers noticed a digital camera set up near the handlebars of Kelley's 2007 Honda CBR motorcycle.

The Lane County District Attorney's Office won't release the video until the case has been adjudicated.
