Strip club moving to Main Street
By KVAL Web StaffSPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A liquor license for a club that offers nude dancing is on the agenda for the Springfield City Council May 19. Shakers Bar and Grill applied for the permit for a new location in Springfield - on Main Street. Owner Jack Dugger had to relocate his business after his lease at another location ended in April. "Every day my business is down or not running, it's costing money," he said. "It's costing me money, it's costing the employees money." A public hearing on liquor license renewals is on the council's agenda tonight. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at Springfield City Hall., 225 Fifth Street. According the City of Springfield rules, speakers must limit comments to three minutes. Speakers must fill out a request to speak card, available at the entrances to the council chambers, and present the cards to the city recorder. Some residents aren't excited by the move. Jason Roebuck is coordinating a new farmers market for downtown Springfield. "What you see across the parking lot as you drive down the street would be the strip club," Roebuck said. "You see a business like this open up and some of the great things that are happening, and so it's definitely not a direction the city wants to see." said Niel Laudati, spokesman for the City of Springfield. The building is close to a school, an antique shop, a museum and the Wildish Theater. "I'm afraid that it may deter people from feeling comfortable coming downtown," he said. Dugger doesn't buy the arguments. "People who come in there are the same people who buy antiques and have kids that go to the school. I don't see the issue," he said. "I'd think they'd welcome businesses in instead of having all those empty buildings." |
