Community speaks out over plans for Springfield strip club
By Elissa Harrington
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Residents voiced complaint after complaint after complaint over what could be downtown Springfield's newest business: Shakers Bar and Grill. It is planned to relocate from its location near 19th and South A Street to 535 Main Street.
"For those of us who voted the tax breaks to refurbish this downtown area this goes against the very thing we just got done passing," said Springfield resident Jason Gayton. Another concern among the crowd is that Springfiend Academy of Arts and Academics is located a block away. Parents said they weren't told of the strip joint or gentleman's club until they heard the buzz on the news. "I would probably pull my children out of the school if that establishment was there," said parent Julie Lopez. But just what can the city do? At the moment, Oregon state law does not single out strip clubs and they are allowed in commerical zones. But the Springfield City Attorney did address the public at Monday's meeting and said he's looking at every available option. This includes reviewing downtown zoning and looking at putting clubs like these all in one area. |
