ALBANY, Ore. (AP) - Benton County Search and Rescue teams are searching for a 61-year-old Albany man, whose SUV was found at the top of Mary's Peak.

Siuslaw National Forest Service contacted Benton County Search and Rescue Tuesday to report the unoccupied white sports utility vehicle.

They said it had been left there sometime between Monday and Tuesday morning. The vehicle is registered to Neil Hebert.

Neighbors say they saw Hebert Monday, leaving his residence in his 1992 White Ford Explorer, Oregon license SFN053.

Several Benton County agencies and rescue volunteers are searching the peak for any sign of Hebert.

Forest Service employees say that the upper Mary's Peak gate is not yet opened this year. But the gate was found broken open.

From the Siuslaw National Forest Web site:

Mary's Peak Road closes for winter from the first major snowfall until road is snow free (typically from late November through March) at the Lower Gate (milepost 5.5 at Conner's Camp) and/or the Upper Gate (milepost 7.9).

Depending on weather and road conditions, the Lower Gate is sometimes opened during the winter. The Upper Gate is closed all season.

Why is the road gated and not plowed?

  • Periodic snow and ice make it extremely dangerous and unsafe.

  • Closing the upper portion of the road improves the non-motorized winter recreation experience.

  • Safety for the public and employees is the number one priority for the Forest.
