Human causes suspected in Southern Oregon fires

By Associated Press

CHILOQUIN, Ore. (AP) - Officials say two Southern Oregon fires likely were started by humans, since there were no lightning strikes in the two areas at the time.

The two fires were named the Pine Ridge on Cave Mountain near Chiloquin and the Doak Mountain near Highway 140 northwest of Klamath Falls.

Crews report the Pine Ridge Fire is still burning. It has touched nearly 440 acres and is now about 70 percent contained.

Officials say that human causes of fires can include a number of activities in the forest, including woodcutting, ATV riding or smoking.

Fire officials urge residents to be extremely cautious while outdoors and to follow fire-season rules.
