Glide High School badly damaged by Saturday afternoon fire
GLIDE, Ore. - A major fire at Glide High School Saturday afternoon destroyed one building and threatened another.

The fire started just after noon Saturday in the science building at the school. It quickly spread through the structure making it tough for firemen to go inside to fight the blaze.

Flames could be seen shooting out the ceiling, and firefighters worked to keep the fire away from the other buildings including the gymnasium, offices and classrooms that are adjacent to the science building.

"The fire actually I think, started above the science lab. We have two science classrooms and our home economics building is over there too and right now that's what's on fire," said Glide School Superintendent Don Schrader.

A greenhouse on the east side of the building was melted from the heat, and the gymnasium building was threatened. Firefighters were able to save that building.

Principal Pam Maurice said the library was a total loss. She said it was so hot the computers melted. Books were damaged by heat, water, and smoke. Maurice said the administration offices, were spared, and they were able to save a computer that had all the students' record on it..

The gymnasium suffered water damage to the floor, but Maurice said that was scheduled to be replaced anyway. The new flooring was in the gym, but on palates and was not damaged. Much of the football equipment in storage in the gym, was damaged and does not appear usable.

Maurice said it is a setback but she is confident school will start on time.

The Glide School District passed a bond levy last year for some new buildings and renovations, they have a new science building under construction. They were going to remodel the old science building, and make more classrooms out of it.

Fire investigators say they have pretty much ruled out an electrical problem as being the cause. They were at the school all day Sunday searching for clues and interviewing witnesses to try to determine what started the blaze.
