GLIDE, Ore. -- A sheriff's deputy investigating a break-in at Glide High School found a boot print near a broken window Tuesday morning.

While on routine business just a few hours later, the deputy visited a home and spotted a boot that looked like it fit the footprint.

The boot belonged to a visitor to the home, who the deputy arrested and charged with burglary.

The story begins Monday night, barely two days after Glide High School exploded in flames, destroying portions of a school that was currently under renovation and expansion. | BACKGROUND

On Monday night around 11 p.m., a security guard at the school saw a man inside the perimeter fence in the new construction area. The man fled on foot when the guard approached.

Douglas County Sheriff's deputies discovered 16 rolls of copper wire missing from the Sims Electric trailer. Nine of the rolls had been thrown over the perimeter fence. The value of the wire was estimated at $1,200.

Deputies searched the area but did not locate the suspect.

On Tuesday morning before 8 a.m., a deputy went to the Glide High School job site to follow up on the burglary. The deputy discovered the suspect had entered the trailer through a small window. The deputy located some shoe prints left by the suspect.

At about 9:45 a.m., the same deputy was at a residence in the 100 block of Mt. Scott Lane to serve a civil paper on an unrelated matter.

The deputy noticed a pair of shoes on the front porch. The tread pattern on the shoes appeared similar to the shoe prints found at the scene of the burglary.

The deputy determined the shoes belonged to Tony Batchelor, a resident of Rosburg who was visiting someone on Mt. Scott Lane.

The deputy interviewed Batchelor and then arrested him for the burglary.

Batchelor was lodged in the county jail on Second Degree Burglary and First Degree Theft charges.
