Inmate mounts not-so-great escape into ceiling

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A jail inmate climbed over a clear barrier in an interview room Wednesday afternoon and assaulted a private investigator before climbing into the crawl space above the ceiling, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

A corrections deputy subdued the inmate with pepper spray but abandoned an attempt to take the inmate back into custody after discovering the ceiling supports were not strong enough to hold his weight.

Two Roseburg police officers described as being "of smaller stature" went into the crawl space to convince the man to come down.

Karl Volosin, 28, faces charges of Attempted Escape in the Second Degree and Assault in the fourth degree, both Class A Misdemeanors.

Volosin -- who last week pleaded guilty to a charges of failing to report as a sex offender, tampering with a witness and possessing a weapon while an inmate, amongst others -- was in an interview room in the jail being interviewed by a private investigator for a local attorney.

At about 3 p.m., Volosin climbed up and over a clear barrier between the interviewer and inmate and assaulted the private investigator. Volosin then was able to climb up the barrier and into the crawl space above the ceiling tiles.

The incident lasted about 30 minutes.
