Inmate loses his third attorney
By Associated PressROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) -- A lawyer representing a Douglas County Jail inmate has withdrawn from the case after the man allegedly attacked the attorney's private investigator last week. Ken Madison had hired Grants Pass private investigator Barry Hostetler to help with Karl Volosin's pending cases. During a meeting in a jail interview room, Volosin scaled the Plexiglas barrier separating him from Hostetler and attacked him before climbing into a crawl space above the ceiling tiles, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said. Madison was the third attorney to represent Volosin, a registered sex offender who landed in jail on charges stemming from a July 2007 assault. A conflict between Volosin and his first attorney, a public defender, led officials to seek aid from a group of local attorneys who take court-appointed cases. The second attorney withdrew when Volosin allegedly threatened him. Madison told a Douglas County judge Monday that the remaining attorneys who take court-appointed cases also hire Hostetler, and that a Eugene attorney would be needed. Volosin, 28, had been scheduled to plead guilty and face sentencing Monday. The man Volosin is accused of assaulting last summer attended the hearing, and at one point Volosin turned around and appeared to mouth something to him. Volosin has also been accused of offering to pay someone to threaten the man in an attempt to keep him from cooperating with the prosecution, according to court records. Volosin's next scheduled court date is Aug. 25. Copyright 2008 The Associated Press. |
