Woman copes after finding fiance murdered

By Kim Quintero

EUGENE, Ore. - Sharlene Sheridan walked into her own home to find her fiance, 35-year-old Lance McBride, shot to death in her Randall Street house back on July 26.

Police are still searching for a suspect and a motive behind Eugene's first murder of 2008.

Sheridan is trying to cope with reality after the love of her life was taken from her in such a brutal way. The mother of five asked we not show her face on camera out of fear for her safety.

" 'I love you ... I'll see you when I get home.' Those were the last words I heard from him," said Sheridan.

Sheridan gripped pictures of her beloved fiance while remembering the happier times like the day he asked her to be his wife.

"He went in and he took a shower and actually put a suit and tie and the whole works on, and I figured 'Well, if you're going to that extreme, so will I.'" said Sheridan. "So I put on a long dress and we went out to dinner, and as soon as dinner was over he proposed."

But Sheridan and McBride never made it to the altar. Her dreams of sharing a life with him and her kids was shattered after returning home from her graveyard shift at Winco Foods.

"Came to the door, realized the front door was locked, but I could hear the TV on, which kind of threw me off because if he had gotten up to turn the TV on, he would have unlocked the door knowing I was coming home," said Sheridan. "And I had my arms full of groceries, still groceries in the truck, and walked in to set them on the table and that's when I found him."

McBride was shot to death. Police worked around the clock sifting through evidence, but still no witnesses, suspect, or obvious reason for such a rare event in this community. His murder was the first of the year in Eugene.

Sheridan is finding it hard to continue on after the fateful day.

"Trying to get on with my life, but in the same respect, I can't. All I have is the visions of what I saw when I came home that morning," said Sheridan.

She described McBride as someone would do anything to help a person in need and believes whoever murdered him didn't know him.

If you have any information on this case, you should call Eugene Police Detective Ted Williams at 541-682-5175.
