Thieves burglarize Coburg police
By Elissa Harrington
COBURG, Ore. - The Coburg Police Department has found itself in quite a predicament - the victim of a crime.
"To be honest with you, we've never had to deal with a police station being burglarized before," said Sergeant Alan Gilbert of the Oregon State Police. He's investigating a crime he calls, well, unusual - the burglary of the Coburg Police Station. "We're people, too, we have buildings too," Gilbert said of law enforcement. "It's just out of the ordinary when it happens to another officer or police department." Here's what happened. Last week on either Thursday night or early Friday morning, someone broke into the police station and stole four handheld police radios. They are valued at about $4,000 or $5,000 apiece. They also stole 75 gold coins. "It feels like a slap in the face," Gilbert said. Around town, local residents shared their opinions. Some found it funny. Others were concerned. And some simply didn't care. Gilbert said they do have some leads and hopes this case won't be a mystery for too long. "We're confident we'll find out who did this," he said. "We will find these people." Police have been searching pawn shops and Internet sites like eBay and Craigslist to see if someone's trying to sell these stolen items. If you hear or see anything, you're asked to give them a call on their tip line. That number is 1-800-452-7888. |
