Coburg police chief talks about state investigation
By Elissa HarringtonCOBURG, Ore. -- The state is looking into allegations Police Chief John Bosley made false statements about an assault rifle. The city sold the gun as surplus property but it actually belonged to a Federal agency. The investigation is in its preliminary stages, according to Jeanine Hohn with the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. She said investigators were provided information that some statements and documents during an inqury by the Oregon Department of Administrative Services and the Department of Defense might have been false as to the location of the weapon. She declined to say who provided the information to her department. Chief Bosley spoke to KVAL TV news Thursday, who said the sale to a Coburg resident was legal but that there was confusion in getting the weapon back to that Federal agency. "He had bought the weapon from the City in good faith," says Bosley, "and just basically did not want to sell it back to the City. It wasn't until we learned that the weapon was actually owned by another agency that that person was then ordered to bring the weapon back, and he did." The chief denies making false statements. The investigation comes on the heels of other troubles for the department including a break-in at the Coburg police station and layoffs.
