City: Olympic Trials recycled 69 percent of waste
By KVAL Web StaffEUGENE, Ore. -- The Eugene 08 Olympic Trials generated 29.3 tons of garbage that was hauled to a landfill. Another 66.45 tons of platic, glass, wood, food waste and other materials were composted, recycled or donated. That gave the Olympic Trials a 69 percent recovery rate. A brief report on the efforts in the latest City of Eugene newsletter compared the Trials to the 68 percent recovery rate at April's Earth Day event and the 81 percent recovery rate at the Good Earth home show in January. The Trials was the largest of the three events, with 165,000 attendees over 10 days. The four-day home show attracted 28,000 people; 1,900 attended the Earth Day events. The Local Organizing Committee for the Trials and project managers promoted the “think zero waste” effort, according to the newsletter. Food vendors served food and drink with compostable plates, cups and utensils, and volunteers sorted the waste to divert recyclables from the landfill. |
