Overhead wire theft cuts Eugene phone service

EUGENE, Ore. -- About 800 phone lines were out of service around 10th and Taylor in downtown Eugene Thursday afternoon after someone stole a section of overhead phone line.

Qwest Communications first got the service call around noon, then called police later in the afternoon when it appeared someone had intentionally cut and stolen a section of wire. The initial reports said between 15 and 50 feet of wire were missing.

Until they're able to complete their repairs, police say you should use a cell phone to call 911.
