Rattle Fire grows to 11,000 acres

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Two houses at Slide Creek, Ore., were evacuated as the Rattle Fire grew to over 11,200 acres.
Fire officials say a plume of smoke rose to over 35,000 feet and carried burning embers up to two miles from the head of the fire. The fire grew more than 4,100 acres, and now totals 11,207 acres. Most of that is within the boundary of the Boulder Creek Wilderness. That information is based on an infra-red flight conducted Tuesday. Spot fires on the east side of the fire were discovered in the Medicine Creek drainage beyond containment lines, and fire managers recommended to the Douglas County Sheriff to issue a mandatory evacuation notice for two houses at Slide Creek on Forest Service land northwest of Toketee. These houses are under permit from the Forest Service and are used by employees of PacificCorp. The residents have chosen to evacuate. No structures have been lost from the Rattle Fire and no new injuries have been reported. The fireline established around the southern end of the fire withstood the effects of Tuesday's weather event and firefighters will continue to be mop up and patrol the area for the next few days. Today, a cooling trend with a more stable airmass is slowing the fire behavior somewhat, but extreme burning conditions are still present. The weather is predicted to continue to improve for the remainder of the week and will assist firefighters as they continue their containment efforts. Highway 138 remains closed to all traffic on a ten-mile stretch between Dry Creek and Toketee due to large rocks and logs falling off the steep embankment along the highway. |
