EUGENE, Ore. -- The ballots are coming! The ballots are coming!

mailboxYou better get your stamp act together, however: none if by land, but 59 if by post.

Ballots for the Nov. 4 election went in the mail Friday. You should receive your ballot by Wednesday; if it's a no-show, call (541) 682-4234.

Beware: Lane County's bulging ballots are too bulky for standard 42 cent stamps. You'll need to pony up for a 59 cent stamp if you want your vote to count.

And before you cry "poll tax," remember you can always deliver your ballot by hand to any county election office in Oregon. In Lane County, numerous ballot drop boxes will accept ballots up until 8 p.m. on Election Night.

If you elect to wait until you can see the whites of the candidates' eyes, remember: postmarks don't count. Ballots mailed after Halloween may or may not arrive in time, so vote early or resolve to deliver your ballot by hand.

Update: On Wednesday, Oct. 22, the Lane County Elections office agreed to pay the difference in postage, if any, required to deliver the ballots. However, State Rep. Chris Edward, D-Eugene, asked that any voters whose ballots are returned by the U.S. Postal Service contact him at laneballotreturn@gmail.com.
