EUGENE, Ore. -- A member of the Black Gangster Disciples street gang avoided a possible death penalty but will serve a life sentence for his role in a Eugene murder.

Michael Anthony Vaughan, 25, pleaded guilty today in a Lane County courtroom to charges of aggravated murder and arson in a negotiated plea with the district attorney.

Back in November 2006, Vaughan shot and killed a fellow gang member, 21-year-old Noah Thacker, in an apartment complex on West 11th Avenue before setting Thacker's body on fire.

Investigators say Vaughan and Thacker were two of six people involved in a home invasion robbery and attempted murder on Halloween night 2006. Police think Vaughan feared Thacker would tell police about Vaughan's involvement in that crime.

Vaugahn will serve a sentence of life in prison for the aggravated murder plea. He won't be eligible for parole until after 30 years of the term.

Vaughan won't start serving that sentence until he's served over 7 years for his arson plea.

Vaughan could have been eligible for the death penalty if he had not entered the plea agreement.
