VENETA, Ore. -- There are dozens of signs along Territorial Highway, but this one sticks out like a sore thumb.

"GOT WHITE GUILT?" the handmade sign asks. "VOTE HUSSEIN OSAMA BIDEN."

Walter Powers put up the sign on his property along the public road Monday. A second sign reads, "WANT CHANGE WE CAN LIVE WITH? VOTE MCCAIN PALIN."

Powers said he put up the signs to fight back against "all the rhetoric on the radio and in the liberal Register-Guard."

"We don't need a socialist in charge of our government," he said of Barack Obama. "I think Bill Clinton was more than enough."

Powers said he's just exercising his right to free speech, and that until reporters showed up Thursday, no one had said anything to him.

Some people KVAL News spoke to think the sign is too much.

"I don't think race should be brought into the election," said Haley Wagnon.

"I think it's really mean," said Pam Wagnon. "It's totally out of context. Totally juvenile."

"Why not cover a positive 'unofficial political sign' while you're at it!" Duane Taddei wrote in response to sign.

Taddei has a sign of his own -- right on his fence.

"I am a 31-year-old WHITE guy," Taddei wrote, "and am voting for Obama because I believe that he is the best choice for president, not because I feel guilty. Never have felt guilty. Slavery happened, and it is history, get over it, learn about it, understand it, prevent it from happening again and get on with your life."
