EUGENE, Ore. -- The U.S. Senate race in oregon has been called the "dirtiest" campaign in recent memory. Attack ads have been constant, fueled by millions of dollars coming in from out of state.

David Walker with KVAL News sat down with all three candidates and asked them about the mudslinging.

Jeff Merkley: This is why i've really focused on the issues. I said let's hold eight debates throughout this state so we can really have a deep discussion.

Unfortunately Sen. Smith turned me down. That's why I put detailed policy papers up on my Web site Jeff Merkley dot com and encouraged people to take a look at them. You won't find those policy papers on the incumbent's Web site.

It's certainly why I've done a hundred-town tour for change, which I completed yesterday, to hold a public forum with citizens in every corner of this state to talk about the big challenges facing our nation.

Gordon Smith: I've never been in anything quite like this, and I have to say it is tough. Most of what's on your TV set is not from Oregon, it's from outside interests. The Democratic Party wants to get rid of me, and they're spending $20 million to try and persuade Oregonians that that's the right thing to do.

It isn't the right thing to do.

But what's tougher than the campaign is what's going on in the lives of Oregonians, and that's what I'm focusing on. I'm focusing on energy prices, becoming energy independent, I'm focusing on healthcare reform, I'm focusing on financial security and savings and making sure our financial system is not frozen up so you can't get a credit line.

Dave Brownlow: I really thought that this (attack ads targeting Brownlow, the Constituion Party candidate) wouldn't happen. I mean there is much airtime everybody has now seen me and they all go is that you. It is what happened is they did the math about a week ago. In fact a week ago started this and they realized that they were going to lose the race f i was in there.

I've taken a lot of votes or I will be taking -- I already have to people I think over half have voted already I think and people, we know Gordon Smith 12 years.  We don't like him and so people are voting for me knowing that I'm probably not going to win.
