Robots, five shots and tear gas: no one injured in standoff
By KVAL Web StaffEUGENE, Ore. -- A woman who fired five shots during a standoff with police Monday morning faces charges of unlawful use of a firearm and recklessly endangering others.
The house is in the neighborhood north of Churchill High School. Police said Meadow Benedict, 32, refused to cooperate with officers at the scene, who called in crisis negotiations and SWAT teams after hearing a single shot fired around 6:30 a.m. Police believe Benedict fired as many as five shots inside the house over the course of the five-hour standoff. No injuries were reported, and police do not believe officers were a target. A reporter at the scene observed a robot entering and exiting the house, followed by an officer armed with a rifle entering the home.
Police took Benedict into custody. She faces charges of unlawful use of a firearm and recklessly endangering, according to police. During the stand-off, neighbors were either evacuated or instructed to shelter in place. A Community Emergency Message System message was made through the phone company warning neighbors in the area of the situation. Schools were notified of the incident but elected not to lock-down any facilities. The neighborhood where the standoff took place is across a playing field and several streets north and west of Churchill High School across 18th Avenue. |
