Drug dog runs away from handler, gets hit by car
BEND, Ore. -- A state police drug detection dog ran away from her handler and was hit by a car on Highway 97 south of Bend Thursday.
Lola, a 2-year-old female yellow Labrador, suffered a collapsed lung, internal injuries and contusions. She is listed in stable condition at a Bend-are veterinary clinic.
Lola and her handler, Senior Trooper Jason Hansen, pulled about 100 yards off Hwy. 97 to take a break when Lola took off running into the woods.
After searching for about 20 minutes, Hansen requested additional help to find Lola. The dispatch center notified him Deschutes County Sheriff's Office was responding to a report of a dog struck on Highway 97 in the area.
Hansen found Lola injured after she was struck in the northbound lanes of Highway 97 by a 2007 Subaru Outback. The car's driver, a 47-year old Bend man, provided Lola with initial help until officers arrived.
Hansen transported Lola to a Bend area veterinary clinic for treatment.
