EUGENE, Ore. -- Lane County woke up to light rain after a forecast that called for snow and freezing rain.

Most schools are open, although McKenzie and Marcola schools are closed. Applegate, Crow and Lorane schools don't plan to open this week.

The Eugene and Springfield school districts canceled all afternoon and evening activities.

Snow is falling in the McKenzie and Marcola areas, according to viewer e-mails.

"It is snowing HUGE flakes in Rainbow (3 miles West of McKenzie Bridge)," wrote Janet Biles, who sent in the photo below. "We have an accumulation of 5 inches and growing."

The National Weather Service forecast calls for rain this morning with highs around 35. The snow level is forecast to fall to 500 feet by afternoon with possible snow overnight.

There is a chance of snow Friday, followed by clearer -- and colder -- skies Friday night, with lows down to 10 F.

Snow is likely again by Saturday night.

The weatherfor the southern Willamette Valley has been difficult to forecast, with last Sunday's snowstorm in Portland only delivering blue skies to Eugene and Springfield. The snow came later Sunday night, delivering snow -- and traffic headaches -- to the area.

The National Weather Service forecast as of 11:30 a.m. called for a 100 percent chance of snow this afternoon in Eugene with little or no accumulation.
