Friend: Ellmers knows 4 people died in crash

EUGENE, Ore. - We've been hearing all week from friends and family of the four people killed in a horrendous Eugene crash Wednesday night.

In this story, we hear from someone who knows Matthew Ellmers, the man accused of killing them.

KVAL News shot an entire interview with a man who says he's known Ellmers for about five years. Later in the day he called and said he feared for his safety because of his affiliation with the high profile suspect. KVAL News is choosing not to reveal his name and to cover up his face.

The man said Matthew Ellmers knows very little about the crash but he does know four people died. The acquaintance said Ellmers has been asking about the victims, their ages and names.

The man also said he was in the room when officers arrested Ellmers on Friday.

KVAL News asked him how Ellmers reacted.

"I watched," said the acquaintance. "His eyes changed, kind of watched his soul leave his body."

KVAL News then asked the friend if he has heard Ellmers express any remorse or apologies.

"Yes," said the acquaintance."I can tell he cannot express the sorrow that he has. He is just devastated."

KVAL News also asked the man why he is sticking by Ellmers even though he faces such serious charges. He said because Ellmers is still a human being and he's not one to cut off friends because of a tragic mistake.

Ellmers is still recovering from his injuries at the hospital.
