SPRINGFIELD, Ore - Craig Murphy is the editor of the new Springfield Times newspaper.

He's also the photographer.

And the reporter.

"When people see our product, they realize it's a good product," says Murphy. "My boss and I together have about 30 years experience in journalism."

Layoffs, declining circulation and sagging advertising revenues have been in the headlines for newspapers in recent years. In Springfield alone, first the Springfield News ceased publication, then the Springfield Beacon opened - and closed - its doors.

Enter the weekly Springfield Times, which launched online last fall and in print Nov. 21. The edition out Friday will be their 21st.

"The reason for starting a paper right now in Springfield," said Murphy, one of three full-time employees, "is Springfield has needed its own paper for a long time."

Murphy used to work for Times owner Scott Olson at a newspaper in Washington and jumped at the opportunity to help him start one in Springfield.

Olson said the paper's small staff and passion for news will drive this paper to succeed.

"People like reading about their friends and neighbors and about what's going on," Olson said.
