MARCOLA, Ore. -- Target shooting turned into a shootout that sent two men to the hospital with gunshot wounds, according to information released by the Lane County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies had trouble locating the site due to the lack of cellular service in the area. The information was initially relayed to 911 by an acquaintance of one of the victims. Deputies finally located the site off McGowan Creek Road in the Mohawk Recreation Area northeast of Springfield when a victim on a cell phone heard sirens from patrol cars.

"When our deputies first arrived on scene we discovered one victim near a vehicle who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds," Captain Bill Thompson with the Lane County Sheriff's Office told KVAL News. "Deputies checking the area then heard the cries of another victim who sustained a gunshot wound and was off in the brush a short distance away. And ultimately we located a third victim hiding in the brush not far from the scene."

Deputies first found Timothy S. Stevenson, 60, of Eugene, alive but suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Minutes later deputies found a second victim a short distance away in the brush. Channon Wilson, 37, of Eugene had also been shot.

Deputies found a third man, 32-year-old Cheyenne Wilson of Eugene, hiding in the area.

Several firearms were discovered in the area and were taken as evidence.

Stevenson was taken to the hospital by air ambulance; Wilson was taken by ground transport. The extent of their injuries is not yet known.

Investigators do not believe the Wilson brothers and Stevenson were acquainted prior to the shooting.

The brothers were target shooting at the remote spot of land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Stevenson came to the same place and at some point, a confrontation took place. Investigators believe all three men fired weapons.

Investigators suspect alcohol may have been involved. The investigation continues. When complete, the information will be forwarded to the district attorney's office for review.
