Different whale, same plan: Crews bury carcass
Excavation crews got to work Friday morning burying a whale that washed up on the Oregon Coast. By Associated Press and KVAL NewsFLORENCE, Ore. (AP) — Another dead whale has washed up on the beach at the Oregon Coast, only a few miles from where a whale was buried last month. Crews are getting to work burying the juvenile gray that washed up Thursday.
The Register-Guard newspaper in Eugene reported the juvenile gray whale that washed up near Florence appeared emaciated. But state parks officials said there was no sign the gray whale got entangled in nets or that it had any significant sores or wounds that might indicate disease or injury. Dennis Lucas, park manager at Washburne State Park, told KVAL News the whale washed up on the stretch of coast between the Washburne Day Use Area and Heceta Head, north of the Hobbit Trail. Lucas said Leisure Excavation is on its way to bury the whale -- the same company that buried a fin whale that washed up dead near Florence last month. Samples taken from that whale to determine why it died are still being analyzed. Crews got started Friday morning digging a hole to bury the whale.
