STEVENSON, Wash. -- "Skamania" is the Chinook Indian word for "swift water," so the Skamania Lodge resort is aptly named.
Nestled in the Columbia River Gorge, not far from Bonneville Dam, Skamania resort -- with golf and outdoor activities galore -- makes for a great golf getaway.
This slice of tranquility is just 45 minutes east of Portland.
The resort's 18 tree-lined holes of mountain golf wind through the resort's 175 wooded acres.
Don't let the relatively short par 70 layout fool you on the scorecard. There are holes where you will definitely want to put the driver away, and instead play a more accurate iron.
"I've always said two of your favorite clubs here might be a rake and a chainsaw," said Dave Griffin with Skamania Lodge. "Reason is, it's rather narrow, and when you do drive it, it's not particularly long. We've only got about 6,200 yards, but it makes up for that with a degree of difficulty."
And it's not just golf at Skamania: there are plenty of hiking and biking trails to enjoy as well.
"You will see activities, everything from croquet to outdoor firepits," Griffin said. "We'll be roasting marshmallows here a little bit later tonight and doing s'mores. The kids love that, love the experience, and it gives them something, a memorable experience while they are here."
The lodge itself has the feel of something from 100 years ago and features a wall of glass where you can sit and soak in the beauty of the Gorge.
"I was here of course at Christmas, and it's just beautiful as you look down upon the Gorge at Christmas time," Griffin said. "We had a little snow on the ground: it was 'Polar Express.' It was perfect."
And in the summertime, it's hard to find a place more beautiful than this golf getaway near the swift water.
