EUGENE, Ore. -- A fire destroyed a house and shut down Territorial Highway Monday morning while firefighters worked to knock down the flames.

Firefighters said no one was injured.

"There were a couple of dogs that were near the home or inside the home," said Heather Miller with Lane County Fire District #1. "Passersby were able to save them."

Firefighters were not able to save the home at 83218 Territorial Highway. Both the garage and house were engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Once firefighters determined no one was inside the house, they adopted a defensive stance to keep the fire from spreading since the structure itself was so far gone.

Firefighters from the Oregon Department of Forestry responded to ensure the blaze didn't escape and spark a wildfire.

The fire prompted Territorial Highway to be closed to traffic. The narrow shoulder provided too little space for both firefighting equipment and traffic, Miller said.

Firefighters trucked in water to fight to fire since the home sits on a rural lot without a fire hydrant. Firefighters from Lorane also responded to help fight the blaze.
