Police: Drunk driver causes wreck that closes I-5 for hours

Oregon State Police said this Lincoln Navigator was struck from behind early Sunday after entering Interstate 5 near Salem.

SALEM, Ore. - A Salem man was critically injured when his sport utility vehicle was rear-ended by a woman police believe was drunk and driving on Interstate 5 early Sunday.

After the wreck, police believe the alleged drunk driver parked her van in the middle of the freeway and ran away, causing another wreck.

Azucona Garza, 31, of Salem, was lodged in the Marion County jail on charges of DUII, reckless driving, recklessly endangering, assault and failure to perform the duties of a driver, according to Oregon State Police. She was also cited for refusing to take a breath test.

According to state police, she was driving a 1995 Mercury Villager van south on I-5 about 4:45 a.m. when she rear-ended a 1999 Lincoln Navigator SUV that had just entered the freeway from Market Street. The driver of the SUV, 26-year-old Jose Zendejas of Salem, lost control of his vehicle, which jumped the dirt berm in the median and rolled across the northbound lanes before coming to rest on its side on the shoulder, state police said.

Following the wreck, state police said, Garza parked her van in the center lane and ran away. A 2001 Mercury Sable also heading south on the freeway then struck the parked van.

Zendejas and a passenger, 30-year-old George Cervantes of Eugene, were both taken to Salem Memorial Hospital, where Zendejas remained in critical condition Sunday. Cervantes was treated and released but was lodged in the jail on an outstanding probation violation warrant out of Washington County, state police said.

Salem police later found Garza nearby, and troopers subsequently arrested her in connection with the wreck.

I-5 was closed in both directions for more than three hours following the wreck. State police said no troopers were on duty when the wreck happened and Salem police held the scene until troopers could arrive from their homes.
